Port Silver is located in the North coast of the island of Santo
Domingo, place selected by Cristóbal Columbus.
Columbus
discovers San Felipe of Port Silver in his first trip, the 12
of January of 1493 and called to the mountain (present Hill Isabel
de Torres) Mount of Silver because in his top there are clouds
that make it appear like of silver. From her the city Port of
Silver takes the name.
When
arriving Columbus at the island of Santo Domingo in 1492 first
that constructs is the Fort of Christmas. Destroyed this one he
constructs to the first city in called America the Isabela the
2 of January of 1492.
The
city of Port Silver was founded on the 1502 by Nicholas de Ovando
in the place selected by Columbus. In 1508 the shield of arms
with a silverplated mount, in whose superior ends a F and a V
are recorded, and on the foot of the mountain was granted to him
white and blue waves.
The
Strength of San Felipe is the only witness of the city of century
XVI. This fuertaleza constructed from 1564 to 1577. The convent
of San Pedro Martyr who was still on at the moment of the second
foundation falls in deterioration at the moments of the Haitian
occupation.
In
1974 it was chosen by its coastal characteristics like tourist
pole by means of presidential decree. As it leaves from the program
of preparation of Port Silver with tourist aims improved the infrastructure
of the historical center like the aqueduct, the levee was constructed,
fixed streets and contenes, recovered the Fort of San Felipe,
and funicular was constructed to raise the hill Isabel de Torres.
The Victorian public square of the central base was reconstructed
and recently by initiative of the government the station of the
train was reconstructed, the Faith in the Povernir and the Bridge
of Guinea was recovered.
In
order to begin, it raises the teleferico until the top of Monte
Isabel de Torres of almost 1.000 meters of height. There, on the
feet of a gigantic statue of Christ Redentor (who remembers the
Bent one to us of Rio de Janeiro) it is appraised a panoramica
and moving Vista of the city and its environs. The fans to the
purchases must visit the Artisan Center, located in the base of
the monument, where they will find crafts Dominican.
In
downtown the influence of the Victorian style of the century last
in the architecture and the design calls the attention. White
small houses style "gingerbread" adorned with bougainvilleas
of different colors and gazebo recovered in the Park Independence
evoke líricas times.
In
downtown the white towers of the church of San Felipe stand out.
In spite of being a simple construction, the church has that typical
provincial enchantment of this region. Near the park it is the
Museum of the Ambar, splendid sample of Victorian architecture,
that contains algunso of the rarest units of this semiprecious
stone.
Another place that must be visited is the Fort of San Felipe,
impressive mass of stone that dates from Constructed century XVI
as defense against the attacks of English and French pirates,
today the fort lodges a plectórico museum of legend and
everything clasede objects related to the history of the city.
At night, the strength is gorgeously illuminated.
Little
distance of the fort it will be able to see the Monument Gregorio
Luperón. General Luperón was one of the greatest
heroes of Dominican history. In 1879, the general reorganized
the country, directing it towards a long period of prosperity.
